Julie London

JulieJulie London (nee Peck, September 26, 1926 - October 18 in 2000) is an American performer and actress. Her career spanned more 40 years. A torch performer renowned for her smooth, sultry contralto singing, London recorded over thirty albums of jazz and pop standards between 1955 and 1969. The first time she was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame was her rendition of "Cry Me a River" that she first performed in her debut album. London was also nominated in 1974 for the Golden Globe Award for her part as Dixie McCall, a nurse on Emergency! Born in Santa Rosa, California, to vaudevillian parents, London was discovered while working as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles, and she began her acting career. London's career as an actor of 35 years began in the film industry in 1944. It included parts as the female lead in several westerns. In the mid-50s, she signed a recording contract with Liberty Records. This was the beginning of her professional career. She released her final studio album in 1969, but continued to have success as the female lead role of nurse Dixie McCall in the television series Emergency! (1972-1979) during which she acted with her husband Bobby Troup. The show was created by her ex-husband Jack Webb.
